Dr. Bationo has also scaled-up an inventory credit system which\nallows farmers to store grain and receive a credit when prices are low, thus\nselling their grain when prices are higher. The micro-dosing technology and\ninventory credit systems are already benefitting millions of farmers in West\nAfrica, having spread from the villages in Niger where Dr. Bationo first\nimplemented these innovations to the wider regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Catherine Nakalembe, a Ugandan researcher, has been\nhonored for her dedication to improve the lives of smallholder farmers by using\nsatellite technology to harness data to guide agricultural decision-making. Her\nwork in this area has helped prevent potentially disastrous impacts of crop\nfailure. Her relentless efforts have also promoted the formulation of policies\nand programs that are directly impacting farmers against the impacts of food\nfailure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulating the winners, H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, Chair,\nAfrica Food Prize Committee and former President, Federal Republic of Nigeria\nemphasized that the efforts of the duo reinforces the call for a simultaneous\nproductivity push and policy pull to transform farming from a struggle to\nsurvive to a business that thrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need innovative Africans like Dr. Bationo and Dr.\nNakalembe to demonstrate the potential of new knowledge and technology together\nwith practical technologies that help improve the value proposition for\nfarmers. These two are indeed exceptional Africans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Africa Food Prize exists to reward pioneering efforts to\novercome obstacles across the agriculture value chain including limited access\nto high quality agricultural inputs, difficulties in accessing markets as well\nas the negative impact of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth Dr. Catherine Nakalembe and Dr Andr\u00e9 Bationo represent\nexactly the kind of entrepreneurial and innovative spirit that African\nagriculture depends on to transform. Their achievements are remarkable,\u201d says\nSvein Tore Holsether, President and CEO of Yara International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her acceptance speech, Dr. Catherine Nakalembe said that\nshe is keen on working with various stakeholders in promoting confidence among\nministry leaders to enable them to proactively dedicate resources towards food\nsecurity rather than retroactively addressing the negative impacts of major\nfood events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe that together, we can harness the great potential\nof our farms to achieve sustainable food systems across the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On his part, Dr. Bationo said he is proud to be living in a\ntime when the continent is leveraging various technology combining fertilizers\nand access to finance by the smallholder farmers to enhance agriculture productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is great to see farmers embracing opportunities offered\nby disruptive digital technologies to increase productivity and promote access\nto services and markets. I am honored to be part of this disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the task of annually selecting winners from a list of\nexemplary nominees, the Africa Food Prize Committee is an independent body of\npreeminent leaders that is chaired by the former Nigerian President, H.E.\nOlusegun Obasanjo. The other committee members are Mr. Birama Sidibe, Dr. Eleni\nZ. Gabre-Madhin, Prof. Joachim von Braun, Amb. Sheila Sisulu, Prof. Sheryl\nHendriks, Dr. Vera Songwe, and Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the Africa Food Prize got a \u2018little sister\u2019,\nknown as the GoGettaz Agripreneur Prize. The winners will be announced during\nthe Africa Food Prize Ceremony at 5pm CAT today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, the AFP was awarded to Dr. Kanayo F. Nwanze, a Nigerian and the former President of the Rome-based International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Dr. Nwanze was recognized for his outstanding leadership in putting Africa\u00b4s smallholder farmers at the center of the global agricultural agenda. The 2017 winners were Kenyan professor Ruth Oniang\u2019o and Malian Mme Ma\u00efmouna Sidibe Coulibaly who were jointly recognized for their exemplary efforts in driving Africa\u2019s agriculture transformation. The 2018 AFP award went to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for its leadership in generating agricultural research and technologies that have improved food security, nutrition, and incomes for millions of people across Africa. While last year, 2019, Dr. Emma Naluyima, a smallholder farmer and private veterinarian from Uganda, and Baba Dioum, a policy champion and agricultural entrepreneur from Senegal were recognized for their remarkable achievements in demonstrating and promoting innovative and sustainable growth in Africa&#8217;s agriculture through improved resource use and market links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Africa Food Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Africa Food Prize recognizes extraordinary women, men,\nand institutions whose outstanding contributions to African agriculture are\nforging a new era of sustainable food security and economic opportunity that\nelevates all Africans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US $100,000 prize celebrates Africans who are taking\ncontrol of Africa\u2019s agriculture agenda.
