\u201cThe Africa Food Prize began as the Yara Prize, and was established in 2005 by Yara International ASA in Norway to honor achievements in African agriculture. Moving the Yara Prize to Africa in 2016 and rechristening it the Africa Food Prize gave the award a distinctive African home, African identity and African ownership.<\/p>\n

The Africa Food Prize and the Yara Prize have brought much-deserved recognition to 17 recipients from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe whose outstanding achievements (summarized below) point the way forward to a more vibrant farming sector for the entire continent by making African farms more productive, profitable and resilient.<\/p>\n

2022: AFRICA FOOD PRIZE LAUREATE<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

\"\"Dr. Eric Yirenkyi Danquah was awarded for his outstanding expertise, leadership and grantsmanship skills that led to the establishment and development of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) as a world class centre for training plant breeders in Africa.<\/p>\n

Dr. Danquah is a Ghanaian plant geneticist, professor, founding director of the WACCI and former director of the Biotechnology Centre at the University of Ghana in the capital Accra. He founded the WACCI in 2007 at the university with the aim of training a new generation of plant breeders to develop improved varieties of staple crops in West and Central Africa. Through Dr. Danquah\u2019s leadership, WACCI attracted more than $30M US dollars of research and development funding and trained more than 120 PhD and 49 MPhil students in seed science and technology from 19 African countries over a period of 16 years. This led to more than 60 improved seed varieties that are in use in Africa, including superior maize hybrid varieties, which will help boost yield for farmers and contribute towards food and nutrition security.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

2020: AFRICA FOOD PRIZE LAUREATES<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

Dr. Andr\u00e9 Bationo,<\/strong> a researcher from Burkina Faso, has been recognized for his efforts into the improvement of micro-dosing fertilizer technology. Dr. Bationo has also scaled-up an inventory credit system which allows farmers to store grain and receive a credit when prices are low, thus selling their grain when prices are higher. The micro-dosing technology and inventory credit systems are already benefitting millions of farmers in West Africa, having spread from the villages in Niger where Dr. Bationo first implemented these innovations to the wider regions.\u00a0Read more<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. Catherine Nakalembe,<\/strong> a Ugandan researcher, has been honored for her dedication to improve the lives of smallholder farmers by using satellite technology to harness data to guide agricultural decision-making. Her work in this area has helped prevent potentially disastrous impacts of crop failure.
