Moving the Yara Prize to Africa in 2016 and rechristening it the Africa Food Prize gave the award a distinctive African home, African identity and African ownership.<\/p>\n<p align=\"&quot;justify\">The Africa Food Prize and the Yara Prize have brought much-deserved recognition to 17 recipients from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe whose outstanding achievements (summarized below) point the way forward to a more vibrant farming sector for the entire continent by making African farms more productive, for research and development of over 650 improved bean varieties &#8211; early maturing, high yielding, resistant to high temperatures, high-iron and zinc content among other traits. These varieties are consumed by over 37 million people in Africa significantly improving nutrition, health, and food security in the continent. He founded the WACCI in 2007 at the university with the aim of training a new generation of plant breeders to develop improved varieties of staple crops in West and Central Africa. Through Dr. Danquah\u2019s leadership, WACCI attracted more than $30M US dollars of research and development funding and trained more than 120 PhD and 49 MPhil students in seed science and technology from 19 African countries over a period of 16 years. Dr. Bationo has also scaled-up an inventory credit system which allows farmers to store grain and receive a credit when prices are low, thus selling their grain when prices are higher.
